Five ways you keep control of your class

INTRODUCTION
I have had years of experience teaching children of all ages and abilities in fitness , active education and PE. I have come across the best behaved and the worst behaved children in my sessions and lessons.
My background is in teaching secondary aged children but have taught from the ages of 3 upwards. I have lectured in Education, and I now own Fitness For Your Future, a health and fitness company which works with schools and the community.
PROBLEM
Regaining control of a class of kids can be difficult at times.
This becomes even more so when you are new to teaching or instructing.
I  Have outlined some of the ways you can quickly gain control back in your class and create a more conducive learning environment.

  • position the class in groups so you can see every child. If you are using mats get them to sit down first whilst you stand at the front of the class. Fter they have sat down. You will notice that the louder children are paired up and at the back of the class. Move to the back of the class and teach from that end. Ech week change your position so that they don’t know where you are going.

  • once the groups are settled mix the groups up so you show control of the group . Always make a note of the groups and every week put them in the same groups. You will get the children trying to test you by returning to their original set up. Stay with it!

  • use time as a motivator for work to be finished. For example when completing a written task say ’2 minutes left’ then 1.5 minutes, 1 minute  and so on. Your voice should change as you work down the minutes.  The closer you get to the zero the louder and sharper it gets. This also acts as a motivator.

  • be conscious of the transition between your sessions. Know what task is next and how you will reduce the waiting time for setting up .  Keep tasks short and to the point. Learn to get your point across in the most precise way.

  • when changing activity or during a transition within the lesson, change position quickly and call the kids over to your new position in the room and site them down.

There are times when you use one or two  of these techniques but the skill is in mastering them all so they are autonomous. Also prepare your teaching resources and educational material before the class starts and set up for your class coming into the fitness / health or any other session that you are teaching.

What techniques do you use to keep control in your sessions / class?

Let me know and I will add to the list!

A wee trip to Canada

Question:

We do PE but how much of that lesson do we actually do?

Do kids move enough in a PE lesson for it to make a difference to their health?

Is this not the point the of Physical Education?

A wee trip to Canada Why not the way we think of PE and the health of our children.

I went on a visit with Enfield Council to Canada back in 2007 ….The objective was to look at their provision of PE and of Daily Physical Activity (DPA). What we experienced was well worth it  - to find a different system to that of the English and Scottish one for that matter.. The key findings that I came away with (in my opinion this is) were the following:

  • What they did during PE lessons

  • What they did outside of school

  • The value they placed on PE and Sport

From what I grasped the secondary PE lesson was mainly game and fun based. The teachers explained that if the student want to learn a skill in a sport they will go to a club. PE in schools there after a certain age becomes a fun team like experience. Sounds pretty spot on to me.

My experience of the ofsted lesson and general framework in England aims to educate throughout and maintain the structure. This is the country through and through though. Frightened of letting things go and not having control!

The Canadian system puts a lot of value on PE and on the taking part…I think that if we can enthuse our children into wanting to move more…(hence the last blog post) then we would slowly get back to that active society we used to live in. There is a place for technology but it will take over if humans don’t look after their own personal technology.

If you don’t look after your body, where else are you going to live!

How much do your kids MOVE?

………………………………………………………………………

What is MOVband?

MOVband is a wrist-worn activity monitor which combined with the MOVband Challenge inspires kids to get active.

MOVband is more than just a cool pedometer.  When combined with the MOVband Challenge, the result is a fun and effective fundraising program for schools and organizations ………………………………………………………………………………….

With the MOVband Challenge, the value of exercise is instilled in kids at a young age, and your school or organization optionally raises money for much needed wellness & fitness programs. Kids love it, and beyond benefiting kids, it benefits teachers and schools too as the more kids exercise the better behaved and more focused they are in the classroom. Not to mention how proud parents will be of their children’s achievements! Most importantly it’s for all kids – athletic, non-athletic, no matter their interests or strengths. Everyone can move. Now, let’s getMOVing!

School Sports and Health and Fitness in our Schools?

Sports or Health and Fitness – Right or Wrong?

As a Former Head of Department for PE in a large Secondary School, something that really irritated me was Sports Companies that would come in and do a poor job… I think this is particularly frustrating because I understand the Education System. I know that Head Teachers and Teachers in general are being worked far too hard. The pressures of raising attainment levels in Maths (Numeracy) and English (Literacy) are more than ever the be all and end all of a schools priorities. So they don’t have the time to Vet providers the way they should.

Scenario 1 – I am walking through the school grounds on my way to a meeting when I see three coaches standing in the middle of he field with around 60 kids running around doing as they please… The sports coaches were chatting! and getting paid for this….[private company whom I won't name and shame]. I did mention that it was [mayhem] out there..to the deputy  head teacher who then questioned what I meant……….Needless to say that that company STILL have a contract at the school..Shocking – Kids do not learn a thing – That’s the bad part really.

There are some good things that go on in the background to help kids develop their fitness and health and some schools are doing it better than others but still… How can a Head Teacher be expected to care about something (Health and Well being / Fitness – Physical and Psycological), when there targets don’t reflect this area?

I am looking for ideas opinions and answers here because this is one person here saying what he thinks…

Another question that I would love to bring up especially with the comment above about the TIME element – how can a SPORTS Organisation suddenly change the direction of it’s marketing because of a change of objectives made by the Government – what apart from the business element can justify this.. I really do understand that business is business but I can’t get it through my mind how Sport can be specifically ‘Health and Fitness’.

SCHOOLS DO NOT HAVE TIME to care about whether it is sports or health…!

Fitness Classes – Exercise Classes – Mind and Body Fitness – Aerobics – Conditioning – CardioTastic – 20-20-20

I mean we all need to survive in the changing climate but when a Sports Provider for schools suddenly turns into the Leading Health and Fitness Provider, I need to question it!

Sports are Sports and Health and Fitness is Health and Fitness. They compliment but should not be considered the same.

We need to be addressing the Health issues of our Kids in Schools not just trying to solve the behavioural and obesity problem by throwing more sporting opportunities once again into the mix. There is a place for sport and Kids will access it if they want to e.g. football (apart from the extreme sports and expensive sports which I agree can be a great way to engage children). We see Local Authorities giving responsibility to the Sports Development who do not get that H&F is a specialist topic just like Trampolining…….And do know try to work along side the true experts…..SPORT SPORT SPORT…?

Question – When will there be a time that people realise that because you are part of the sports development team that you naturally can lead fitness sessions?

Question – When will there be a Fitness division for example or lead fitness people who are actually put in post because they are and have been personal trainers / Aerobic Instructors….REPs qualified...

Please tell me your experiences! This post is designed to cause debate and I completely open to it..I am sure that you have your own thoughts.

FFF Thought Spot [Food in schools]

I write this blog with a few of hats on – my teacher hat – my researcher hat – my common sense hat.

I am also thinking about a few different things at the same time [that is me all over]:
  1. The News and constant referral to Childhood Weight and the problems surrounding Overweight and Obese children
  2. The School day and the quality of nutrition and food sold in schools (not offer sell more of!)

 What’s the big idea?

I know they need money but if there is such a problem which there is then why:
  1. sell the type of food an
  2. have break times so close together ? Maybe an isolated situation but even if it is , why be awarded with a healthy schools status which lets be honest is a tickBox
Taken from the point raised by Jamie Olivier who, although clearly in it for the money had exactly the same view point as me, we need to change the way schools operate their schools system.
I personally think that if schools addressed the types of food, the portions, the quality, and most of all the times of day that the Kids eat their food – we would not only see an improvement in health but moreover an improvement in grades.
Check out an abstract from Jamie Olivers Website – http://www.jamieoliver.com/school-dinners
The schools sold a lot of deep-fried fast-food like chips, fried turkey nuggets, pizza and pies. After the programme was shown on Channel 4 (Jamie’s School Dinners), the public showed support for the increase of funding for school meals, causing the government to create the School Food Trust. The topic became a factor in the 2005 UK general election. Some parents opposed Oliver and the move by government to alter children’s diets, and scenes of parents passing hot-dogs and hamburgers and chips through school fences was seen
A Little Extra just to make us all think…
Website for the worlds fattest country – http://www.forbes.com/2007/02/07/worlds-fattest-countries-forbeslife-cx_ls_0208worldfat_2.html
Britain rank number 28th with 64.8% of all adults over the age of 15 overweight. Mmmm – Good luck NHS system in 10 years time when this % drastically increases.
Winding it up! (it’s not winding me up honestly)
The World Health Organisation estimate in the coming years a  40% increase in obese adults – So…basically those 15 year old kids we teach now…look around your school – class – the High St. What will the scene look like then (40% nearly half the population!)
Our eyes are more attuned to the bigger look now and it has become the social norm. This gradual increase in size and weight has crept up on us and is snowballing out of control. Kids especially are too excepting of the situation AND I don’t blame them – They ARE KIDS…PARENTS let’s get a small grip on the situation and do our jobs as parents.

Scenario no.1 Child finishes After School Club. He is sweating! Mum hands him a Burger roll to eat on the way home. TRUE STORY

Scenario no.2 Head Teacher goes out into the playground to check on the physical activity clubs only to spot a parent handing her daughter a bag of McDonalds Chips through the fence. TRUE STORY

What IS THAT ALL ABOUT……?

Please tell me your experiences. If you have some positive examples of #change let me know.

Your child is worth it – Active Maths DVDs

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING

InClass Fitness ‘Teaching Times Tables’ DVD – Home Edition

Helping Your Child Achieve The Grades You Dearly Want Them To

A warm hello to you from Fitness For Your Future

Do you remember your school days? How were you at learning your times tables? I was awful. I remember it took me longer than the other kids in my class to memorise them and I remember the dread I felt when my teacher told me to stand up and recite a times table in front of the whole class. I also clearly remember my teacher’s negative reaction to my inability to grasp the concept, and to the many mistakes I made. I felt confused and humiliated and although I’ve forgotten a lot about my school days, that memory stays with me and to this day I still feel traumatised by the experience.

For many other people too, school memories can still affect us adversely well into adulthood.

If only there had been some way to make learning times tables easier, more fun and more memorable; some way to help young children today avoid going through what perhaps their mum or dad did.

This was the inspiration for the

InClass Fitness ‘Teaching Times Tables’ DVD – Home Edition

If your child is finding it hard to cope with their times tables, as perhaps

you once did, then for £9.98 our new, unique, innovative

Our DVD is ideal as a teaching tool that engages with young people who otherwise might struggle to learn their times tables. It’s colourful, lively, and a LOT of FUN. Twelve Reasons Good And True

Why Schools Benefit From Working With Fitness For Your Future

As diet and lifestyle choices change, young people are eschewing exercise, eating too many sweets and salty snacks, not getting enough sleep, and many are carrying too much weight, Gaming, Tweeting, and Facebooking into the early hours combined with less opportunities to engage in exercise has resulted in a generation of young people who are less active, less fit and ignorant of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

There is evidence to support that an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise can have an influence on mental health and consequently have a negative impact at school. And that’s where we come in. Fitness For Your Future offers a comprehensive, unique range of initiatives that –

  • develop and increase young people’s levels of fitness

  • combat and reduce obesity in participants
  • create interest in all aspects of health and fitness including nutrition, mental health and how the body works.
  • develops young people’s knowledge and understanding of the benefits of following an active lifestyle
  • develops young people’s knowledge and understanding of the risks of leading a sedentary lifestyle
  • empower young people to take ownership of their individual fitness objectives and goals
  • allow each young person to follow an individual programme of learning where progress is made and results attained at a pace that suits the participant
  • schools can incorporate into participant’s timetables without affecting his or her schooling and the day to day running and efficiency of the school
  • are measurable and linked to the National Curriculum
  • develop and consolidate positive relationships between school staff members and pupils
  • are flexible, constantly evolving, and regularly upgraded to meet the changing needs and demands of schools and their pupils

InClass Fitness Launches Website To Help Children

A BRAND NEW WAY FOR KIDS  TO LEARN BASIC MATHS

InClass Fitness DVDs Now Available To Buy Online AND To Use At Home

It’s all Go Go Go here at InClass Fitness! Our website www.inclassfitness.com has just launched and we’re very, very excited about the prospect of offering an online service that we hope will make a positive difference to many lives.

We’ve got a great selection of DVDs for you to choose from designed and developed to support young children with their maths in the comfort of their own home.

The DVDs were previously only available to schools; now we’re delighted to offer Home Versions to parents and children in the UK.

A Healthy Mind And A Healthy Body For Your Child

Not only do we help children better understand the complicated concepts                                    behind maths but we’re BREAKING NEW GROUND by                            combining learning maths with exercise

We call it Active Learning

InClass Fitness recognised that

  • children are no longer getting sufficient exercise,
  • that obesity levels are on the rise even in very young children
  • that children are missing out on a fun part of growing up that we, as parents, took for granted when we were their age
  • that learning and understanding maths using traditional teaching methods does not suit every child

So we thought we’d do something about it. But instead of just coming up with A N Other Fitness DVD 4 KIDZ we acted upon the positive association between academic performance and physical activity and devised a series of DVDs that are learning-based, stimulating, energising and enjoyable.

Here’s the bottom line…

Every child who uses our DVDs is not only developing their maths skills but they’re keeping fit and having a lot of fun doing it too!

Never again will your child complain about having to do their homework!

Online and At Your Service

Our website is always open for business. We work through our tea-breaks and we’re very approachable and customer friendly, and we care. We know how important this is to you.

You’ll also find www.inclassfitness.com to be very user-friendly, free of waffle, and full of useful information about InClass Fitness and each of our products.
